Mattoon Fire

My first breaking news event of the year found me as I was working on my resume for my upcoming job search. A structure fire in Mattoon, Ill., was reported just before midnight on Thursday, and within a few minutes a fellow photographer and I were making our way to cover it. This was the first fire I covered since my time in Reno over the summer, and the situations’ atmospheres couldn’t have been farther apart. Sweating in the hot Nevada sun while covering the final stages of a fire was contrasted to the late night January temperatures of central Illinois.

Flames erupt from a structure as firefighters rip off the siding to put out the blaze at 1317 N. 11th Street in Mattoon Friday around 12:45 a.m. Mattoon fire Chief Tony Nichols said the fire had already broken through the roof when firefighters arrived at the scene.
