News from the year

Over the course of the year I tend to post more sports photography than anything else here on my blog. Along with the new year I hope to change that with running updates of not only sports but my news assignments as well.

Since I started with the Herald & Review in May I have covered everything from tornado damage to the daily life of a clown. I’ve posted a few things like Decatur Celebration, but nothing from more of my daily work.

Here are 54 of my favorite news photos from my time with the Herald & Review so far.

Mattoon Fire

My first breaking news event of the year found me as I was working on my resume for my upcoming job search. A structure fire in Mattoon, Ill., was reported just before midnight on Thursday, and within a few minutes a fellow photographer and I were making our way to cover it. This was the first fire I covered since my time in Reno over the summer, and the situations’ atmospheres couldn’t have been farther apart. Sweating in the hot Nevada sun while covering the final stages of a fire was contrasted to the late night January temperatures of central Illinois.

Flames erupt from a structure as firefighters rip off the siding to put out the blaze at 1317 N. 11th Street in Mattoon Friday around 12:45 a.m. Mattoon fire Chief Tony Nichols said the fire had already broken through the roof when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Sun Valley Fire

Last Sunday I had one of the busiest days so far with the RGJ. Covering whitewater kayaking at the Reno River Festival, leaving to cover a fire, and finally shooting the Reno Rodeo. This was my first fire with the RGJ, and by the time I reached Sun Valley  it had pretty much been put out.
