I was able to try my hand at shooting Mixed Martial Arts on Friday, June 29, 2012. Ultimate Reno Combat 34 was held at the Grand Sierra Resort only two minutes away from the RGJ. I was pretty happy with what I got from the fights, and as a fan, it was great to see the fights live.
With any sport I shoot after the first time I always come away seeing something I could have done better, and I’m hoping I’ll be able to shoot their next event on July 20. Working at a venue like this you are at the mercy of the lights, and from what I was told the lighting at this one was some of the hardest to shoot in. While not perfect I can’t seem to find anything worse than the Lantz Field house at EIU.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the night.
Now onto the main event.
This is probably my favorite sports reaction photos I’ve taken so far.
As I was editing these I thought to myself I haven’t done a black and white photo since I shot for The Daily Eastern News, so here you go.

I finished the final days of my winter break shooting a few of my brother’s wrestling meets and tournaments before heading back to school on the 9th. Here is an overview of the weekend.
Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 marked the start of a weekend of wrestling that ended Tyler’s previously perfect season. Thursday was a home meet at Thornwood High school in South Holland, Ill., against Lincoln Way West. The match ended with Tyler getting the pin with a 1 minute and 3 seconds left on the clock extending his record to 12-0.
Friday marked his first loss against Bradley-Bourbonnais. Tyler wrestled up during the meet going from his usual weight class of 126 to 132. The match ended 5-6 putting his record at 12-1.
Saturday was a double elimination tournament hosted by Bradley-Bourbonnais. Tyler lost his first match to a pin in the first period.
Losing the first match put him in the wrestle back bracket with a chance to take fifth place. In the next match he won with a pin.
Tyler eventually took sixth place loosing his final match in the tournament with a record at the end of the meet of 13-3.
This is the first of five Thornwood high school wrestling meets of my winter break. My brother Tyler, the one in the yellow and blue head gear that is currently falling off, won the match against a Stagg high school wrestler. Tyler was able to get the pin in the second round. The win moved his record to 10-0 for the season. Since Eastern doesn’t have a wrestling team it’s nice to shoot a different sport over break. Over the course of my time off from school I’m going to try to get a little more creative when it comes to shooting wrestling. Hopefully there will be a few more dynamic photos in the future.
